Cryotherapy is a controlled destruction of tissue by freezing and implies the use of cold in medical purposes. Tissue lesions occur due to the formation of intracellular and extracellular ice.

Sequential freezing and unfreezing procedures result in terminating cell membranes. Proteins and phospholipids are denaturized, ischemia of capillary, arteriole and venule occurs, as well as thrombus occlusion. The result of such reaction is tissue necrosis. Cryotherapy is an efficient method of treating large number of skin changes (virus warts, dermatofibroma, hypertrophic and keloid scars, seborrheic keratosis, vascular changes, etc.).

As patients tolerate the treatment quite well, it could be used on children as well. Dr VAIS centers are one of few on the Balkans that conduct cryotherapy by means CrioPenn. The device looks like a pen which contains ampule with liquid nitrogen (87%) which enables precise freezing of the cells at -89oC without any side effects. The treatment is repeated each 7 to 14 days and last for 2-3 minutes.
